Sunscreen & Hair Extensions: What You Need to Know

Summer is amazing for your skin — but not always for your hair extensions. One of the biggest (and least talked about) causes of extension discoloration is sunscreen.

If you’ve ever noticed your blonde extensions turning:

• Peach

• Pink

• Orange

• Brassy

• Patchy

…there’s a good chance sunscreen is the reason.

As a luxury extension specialist in Boston, I see this every year — especially with blondes, highlighted clients, and anyone wearing virgin hair. This guide explains why it happens, how to prevent it, and what products are safe to use.

Why Sunscreen Discolors Hair Extensions

Most sunscreens contain avobenzone, a chemical UV filter that reacts with minerals in water (especially hard water, salt water, and chlorine). When avobenzone touches light-colored hair — especially extensions — it can cause:

• Orange staining

• Pink or peach tones

• Patchy discoloration

• Dullness

• A “dirty” or uneven look

This reaction is chemical, not a toner issue. Once it happens, it’s extremely difficult to reverse.

Virgin hair is especially vulnerable because it hasn’t been coated, processed, or sealed — which is why I warn all Bend & Bond clients to be careful.

Who Is Most at Risk?

You’re more likely to experience sunscreen discoloration if you have:

• Blonde extensions

• Highlighted extensions

• Virgin hair extensions

• K‑Tips (because they’re individual strands)

• Curly or coily extensions (more surface area)

• Hair-loss or fine-hair installs (more exposure to skin)

Even brunettes can get orange patches if sunscreen transfers from your shoulders, face, or hands.

How Sunscreen Gets on Your Extensions (Without You Realizing)

It’s not always from spraying your hair directly. Most discoloration comes from:

• Applying sunscreen to your face → touching your hair

• Sunscreen on your shoulders → hair rubbing against it

• Spray sunscreen drifting in the air

• Sunscreen on your hands → running fingers through your hair

• Sweat mixing with sunscreen → dripping into your hairline

You don’t have to be “careless” — it happens to everyone.

How to Prevent Sunscreen Damage to Extensions

Here’s how to protect your investment:

1. Switch to Mineral Sunscreen (Zinc or Titanium)

Mineral sunscreens do NOT contain avobenzone. They are the safest option for extension wearers.

Look for:

• Zinc oxide

• Titanium dioxide

Avoid:

• Avobenzone

• Oxybenzone

• Octocrylene

These are the ingredients that cause orange staining.

2. Keep Hair Off Your Shoulders When Applying Sunscreen

Put your hair in:

• A claw clip

• A bun

• A high pony

• A silk scarf

Apply sunscreen FIRST. Let it dry. Then release your hair.

3. Avoid Spray Sunscreens Near Your Hair

Spray sunscreen is the #1 cause of extension discoloration.

If you must use it:

• Cover your hair with a towel

• Spray away from the wind

• Apply in a bathroom, not outdoors

4. Rinse Your Hair After Swimming

Salt water + sunscreen = faster discoloration. Chlorine + sunscreen = chemical reaction.

Rinse your hair with clean water ASAP.

5. Use a UV Protectant Made for Extensions

A lightweight UV spray (extension-safe) helps protect color and cuticle integrity.

Avoid anything oily — oils attract sunscreen and heat.

What to Do If Your Extensions Turn Orange

If your extensions have already discolored:

• Do NOT try to tone them at home

• Do NOT use purple shampoo aggressively

• Do NOT bleach or color them

These can damage virgin hair permanently.
